New Quizzes is a modern assessment tool in Canvas that offers enhanced features compared to the traditional Canvas Quizzes tool. With New Quizzes, instructors can utilize advanced question types, better reporting options, and improved accessibility features. Some of the key functionalities that set New Quizzes apart include the ability to shuffle questions, set varied time limits for different students, use stimulus questions, and access richer data insights about student performance.

Creating a Quiz

  1. Navigate to the "Quizzes" section of your course.
  2. Click the "+ Quiz" button.
  3. Select "New Quizzes" from the pop-up window (if prompted to choose between Classic and New Quizzes).
  4. Provide a name for your quiz in the title field.

Set Up Quiz Options

In the Settings tab of the quiz builder, you’ll find various options to configure:

  • Shuffle Questions: Randomize the order in which questions are presented to students.
  • Time Limit: Set the duration for completing the quiz.
  • Attempts: Specify the number of attempts allowed (e.g., single attempt or multiple attempts).
  • Restrict Student View: Choose when students can view their responses or the correct answers.
  • One Question at a Time: Present questions one at a time for added focus.
  • Moderation: Adjust settings for individual students (e.g., extra time or attempts).

Assigning the Quiz

  1. Scroll down to the Assign To section.
  2. Select the group of students or specific students who will take the quiz.
  3. Set the due date, availability date, and until date to control access.

Add Questions

  1. Click on the "Build" button to enter the quiz question builder.
  2. Use the "+ Add" button to create individual questions or add question groups.
  • You can also include Stimulus Questions, which allow students to interact with a block of content (like a passage or an image) and answer related questions.

Question Types Available

  • Multiple Choice: Traditional multiple-choice format with one correct answer.
  • Multiple Answer: Multiple selections required for the correct response.
  • True/False: Simple true or false options.
  • Fill in the Blank: Students type in the correct answer for one or more blanks.
  • Matching: Match items from two lists.
  • Hot Spot: Select a specific area on an image.
  • Essay: Long-form responses that need manual grading.
  • Numerical: Respond to questions with numerical answers.
  • Ordering: Arrange items in a correct sequence.
  • Stimulus Questions: Pair a stimulus (like a reading passage) with related questions.

Publish the Quiz

  • Once your quiz is ready and you’ve added all necessary questions, click the "Return" button at the top to go back to the main quiz screen.
  • Review your quiz settings one last time.
  • When satisfied, click the "Publish" button to make the quiz available to students.


Note: You should not publish your quiz until it is your final product. Although you can make changes to the quiz after it is published, students who have already opened or completed the quiz will not see any of the changes, which may affect their grades.
